Here is a quality, working man’s soap with an aromatic profile that older generations would be familiar with. The scent is of majority creosote, due to o-cresol being the primary active ingredient, with underpinnings of phenol (carbolic acid), not unlike you’d smell in Vick’s Chloraseptic Spray (minus the cherry flavoring), which uses phenol as the local anesthetic/analgesic. This actually causes all carbolic soaps to have a miniscule numbing effect on use, but not enough to deaden the pain, like most “caine” local anesthetics.
The soap’s appearance is unique: a purplish-pink tint that turns from pink to off-white when used. Here’s an interesting factoid: the reason all carbolic soaps gain a white-ish hue when wet is due to a small but negligible reaction between water and phenol (carbolic acid)
Since animal tallow is the majority of the oil used in Fitzroy’s making of this soap, the lather produced is nice and velvet-like. It has a nice moisturizing effect when applied all over when showering, but it’s best to pair it with fragrance-free moisturizing soaps and lotions if one were to avoid too much dry skin.
The aroma is also amplified here, giving a major “coal tar” odor in which is boosted by the fragrance added. Take caution, though, if attempting to use this soap on more sensitive areas, be sure to thoroughly rinse off any residual lather left behind because the soap may cause irritation in those areas. Ask me how I know…
As a soap for general household use, it exceeds expectations in cleaning alone. This soap possesses a slight decreasing effect so when using it to clean a stovetop, not much effort (barring what effort that is used if cleaning with another type of soap) is needed when using the soap as a bonafide cleansing and disinfecting tool.
The germicidal nature of the phenols used in the production of this soap gives those who worry about any pathogens peace of mind. Using this soap to mop the floor is a breeze. One caveat, though, is that it gets extremely sudsy, so keep that in mind. All other variables are easily taken care of, including cleaning the bathroom. Especially the toilet.
4.8/5: It is still nostalgic and very useful in modern times, especially after COVID-19, to have an old standby like Fitzroy’s Carbolic Soap to help maintain a post-COVID-19 world and keep all other endemic pathogens at bay.
